Borders of Hope

4-15-05

Dear Mr. Getman,

Thank you so much for your time and consideration when you talked to us about your past during the Holocaust. I am an 8th grade student at South Side Middle School. You spoke to my class on Wednesday, April 13, 2005. You were very interesting and your life story really helped me to understand what a horrible and emotional time it was then.

Your story really changed me as a person. I have found that I am being a lot nicer to my brothers and sisters. I have four brothers and two sisters and I never really showed them how much I love them and how much I care about them. Hearing what your life was like in person really gave me a better understanding of the Holocaust. I still cannot imagine how dreadful and scary it must have been. In school we are learning about the Holocaust. We watched the movie Schindler's List and I am reading a few books about the Holocaust. It is inconceivable to think about what people had to go through throughout this time. It was very meaningful to me when you said that when you were scared, instead of praying to God, you prayed to your mother. When I grow up, I hope to help stop genocide and make sure it will happen never again. No one deserves to go through that. I am so grateful for your courage and compassion.

I really got interested in your story and I would really like to read your book, Borders of Hope to learn more about what it was like for you. To make sure that genocide never happens again, I will tell your story to others and they will know what the effects of it will be.

I thank you again for your time and generosity for coming to your school and telling us your story.

Sincerely,

Megan R.
